The Overlap

Renée Koldewijn | The Overlap | mixed media | Amsterdam 2018

Dylan Ahern: ‘In recent years Renée Koldewijn went on a journey of discovery in response to a fabric called ‘Good Living’. The journey took her from Indonesia to West Africa, Suriname and back to Europe. For centuries Amsterdam has been a city of divided and shared history. People of different cultures have settled here, sometimes for a while, others to stay permanently. Koldewijn observes both literally and figuratively the different identities people carry with them. Through globalization we experience an increasingly fluid society. Borders are under pressure or fading. Are our identities becoming more and more fluid? The colours of the different cultures influence each other more and more. Koldewijn brings together the shared history in her work through painting with fabric’.
